RJA 3a: Research Question

RJA 3a: Research Question

Who has a greater capacity and shows an aptitude for long term success in college when looking at Public Schools and Charter Schools?

What tests are taken in the schools that will give us a good comparison to one another?

What curriculum are public and charter school teaching?

What makes one school more successful in one area than another?

When are charter schools and public schools successful at creating an educational environment that fosters children’s aptitude for learning and for success in college years? When are they not?

Where is the target demographic for my research?

Why is charter or public school more successful at graduating prepared students?

Should children attend one type of school over another?

Would it be better to adapt the successful elements of each schooling option into the other, therefore making the quality of education equal to one another?

RJA 2c: Research Topic Focus

RJA 2c: Research Topic Focus

Possible conversations people have about the topic of Charter Schools and Public Schools and how prepared children are from these options:

-        What are the SAT / ACT scores of charter schools and public schools?

-        What curriculums are they using?

-        What contributes to the success of the students? i.e. teachers, curriculum, structure, and demographics.

-        Student GPA’s in college.

-        How many students go on to college? How many of these students graduate college?

-        How many students graduate from High School?

-        How are the CSAP and TCAP scores?

Some points of disagreement would be:

-        Are charter schools segregated?

-        Are charter schools pushing public schools to change?

-        Are public schools segregated?
Are public schools more stable and have less closures?

RJA 2b: Research Topic Exploration

RJA 2b: Research Topic Exploration

1)     I used Google to search for the information about Charter Schools and Public Schools. I found a website called educationbut.org. This website listed what they see to be the key differences in Charter Schools and Public Schools. They also listed the resources they used to find this information.

2)     I used Google Scholar and found a paper written by Caroline M. Hoxby with Harvard University. The title of the paper is “Achievement in Charter Schools and Regular Public Schools in the United States: Understanding the difference.” In this Paper, Caroline Hoxby examines reading and mathematics proficiency of charter schools and their neighboring public schools. The paper is forty pages long and gives great statistical data for my research.

3)     I found a website that gives statistical data from College Preperation tests. This information shows how prepared High School students are for College. It gives a breakdown of Charter and Public schools.

4)     I used Finding Dulcinea to locate a news report on SAT scores. The news report was by CNN. I don’t find the source to be the most reliable source since it does not give resources. The article says that SAT scores are on a steady decline. It gave a comparison of SAT scores between a Harlem charter school and a public school. Both schools were in the same building and same neighborhood. The charter school trumped the public school in SAT scores.

5)     On Mashpedia I found general information on education in the United States. It gives brief facts about testing requirements and information about different schooling options.

RJA 2a: Research Topic

RJA 2a: Research Topic

1)     I have chosen the topic: How Public Schools and Charter Schools prepare children for long term success. I have chosen this topic for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that I am studying to get my teaching license in Secondary Math. I am curious how the different curriculums and environments prepare children for long term academic success. I would like to be better informed about this topic before completing my degree. I believe the more informed I am about how children learn, the better teacher I can be. Another reason is that I have four little girls who have been in the Charter School environment and the Public School environment. Both the Public School system and the Charter School system are completely biased about their curriculums. I would like to have more knowledge and facts without relying on a biased opinion.

2)     I don’t know a whole lot about this area. I do know that the classic education model is the one used in most Charter Schools. This model prepares children through repetition. I think this means, for example that the children will learn Shakespeare in second grade and then again in sixth grade but in a more in depth study. I think the philosophy is that you give them all of the knowledge and information up front so when they study it in depth later , they are better equipped and prepared. Again I am not positive about this. Some questions I hope to answer in this essay would be: How are children prepared for college when exposed to the classical education model  and the public school model? How much does the school district and community play into a child’s success? Is this more prevalent to a child’s success than the actual curriculum? Does introducing children to the classics early, give them a head start and better prepare them for college? How do the children’s test scores differ in Public and Charter? How are they similar?

3)     I don’t know a lot about this topic. First I need to find out more about the different teaching methods in both schools. This will probably need to be narrowed down by communities too; say inner suburban neighborhoods, and rural neighborhoods; Low income neighborhoods, and high income neighborhoods. I will need to find test results and learn how to read the test results for standardized testing. I will need to figure out if children have been tracked through their college years and how they perform while in college.  I will probably need to look at individual academic subjects; maybe public school better prepare children for sciences while charter schools better prepare them for languages.
